American football team Green Bay Packers has hired Kevin Manara as its general counsel, replacing Ed Policy, who is being promoted to president and CEO.
Manara joins from fellow NFL team Arizona Cardinals, where he was also GC. At the Packers, he will bring his roughly two decades of experience to provide advice and strategic guidance to executives and football staff, as well as handle legal matters such as litigation, employment, football operations and corporate law.
Wisconsin-based Green Bay Packers has won four Super Bowls in its history, including Super Bowl I in 1966 and most recently in 2010. The team plays its games at Lambeau Field, which holds more than 80,000 people – the second largest in the NFL.
Policy said: “[Manara] brings a wealth of experience at both the league and team level that will be invaluable to the Packers and our overall operations. We look forward to his leadership contributions as a member of our senior staff.”
Manara arrives after almost two years at the Cardinals, which he first joined as a special counsel in 2023 from Las Vegas Raiders, where he spent a year as GC. He previously spent 13 years as vice president of labour relations and policy at the NFL, having started his legal career in private practice at Proskauer Rose where he was an associate in its labour and employment department.
During his time at the NFL, he was responsible for administering and enforcing the league’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association.
Policy, meantime, joined the Packers back in 2012 as GC, before adding chief operating officer responsibilities to his remit in 2018.
In other US in-house sports moves, back in January Major League Baseball team Baltimore Orioles hired Kamaal Jones as chief legal officer and GC from Monumental Sports & Entertainment, owner of ice hockey team Washington Capitals.
In April last year, NFL team and Green Bay division rival Chicago Bears hired Krista Whitaker as CLO from NBA team Miami Heat.
And in November 2023, NFL team Buffalo Bills hired Terry Gilbride as CLO following the dismissal of former GC Kathryn D’Angelo a month earlier.
