Hogan Lovells has promoted 28 lawyers to partner in its first promotions round since announcing a planned merger with US firm Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft.

The latest cohort is the third year in a row that Hogan Lovells has elevated 28 to its partnership, though the number of female partner promotions fell slightly to 46% from 50% a year ago. The firm also promoted 53 to counsel, up from 47 in 2025.

Europe this year accounted for the most partner promotions with 15, up from 12 a year ago. This year’s European promotions were spread across its offices in London (five), Paris, Munich and Amsterdam (two each), and Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Milan and Madrid (one apiece).

The Americas accounted for 12 promotions, having led last year with 13. This year’s cohort is spread across its offices in Washington DC (eight), and Denver, Northern Virginia, Miami and New York (all one each).

Asia Pacific accounted for just one promotion – Shanghai-based international trade and investment partner Stephanie Sun.

The firm’s corporate and finance practice group saw the most promotions with 12, spread across M&A (four), private equity and funds (three), capital markets (two) and real estate, tax, pensions and benefits, and restructuring and special situations (one apiece).

The global regulatory and IP group saw 10 promotions, with IP and international trade and investment getting two apiece, and one each in government relations and public affairs; transportation; pharmaceuticals and biotechnology; communications, internet and media; antitrust, competition and economic regulation; and strategic operations, agreements and regulation.

The litigation, arbitration and employment group completed the promotions round with six, all in litigation.

Miguel Zaldivar, Hogan Lovells CEO, said: “We are delighted to congratulate our newly promoted partners and counsel. This year’s class represents an exceptionally talented group who strengthen our ability to advise clients on their most complex mandates around the world, particularly in highly regulated sectors. Each of them reflects our ambitious and supportive culture.

“These promotions demonstrate our strategy to maintain balance across practices, geographies and sectors. This next generation of lawyers will play a vital role in the continued growth of our global platform and in delivering outstanding service to our clients wherever they operate.”

Hogan Lovells' merger deal with New York-based Cadwalader, which is expected to go to a partners’ vote in the spring, will create the world’s fifth-largest law firm by revenue with a combined turnover of more than $3.6bn, based on their 2024 performance, and 3,100 lawyers.

On Monday, the firm lost two senior Washington DC-based IP partners to Paul Hastings: Lynn Mehler, who was co-head of the global life sciences and healthcare industry group, and Phil Katz, who previously ran the firm’s pharmaceuticals and biotechnology regulatory practice.
