Lawyers fight on fees as client seeks jail release

Lawyers have fallen out over their share of the fees while their client, one of the most famous and colourful Australian criminals, has been seeking release from prison.

Tony Mokbel, who is represented in an Australian TV drama, has been trying to overturn a 30-year prison sentence he received in relation to drug offences. But one of his defence barristers, Melissa Mahady, ended up suing the law firm representing him, Robert Stary Lawyers, for a greater share of the fees. Now a Melbourne magistrate's court has ordered the law firm to pay Ms Mahady about A $14,000 than had previously been envisaged. According to The Age, the head of the law firm, Robert Stary, told Fairfax Media that 'this has left a particularly bitter taste in my mouth'.
