Reed Smith circles KWM partners as Dentons bows out of takeover talks

The possibility of a single-firm takeover of King & Wood Mallesons' embattled European partnership is now off the table as Dentons exits negotiations.

After entering the fray around two weeks ago, a source close to Dentons has confirmed that the global megafirm is no longer considering taking on a large portion or all of KWM’s EUME business. Dentons’ exit leaves behind a group of smaller firms who are still reportedly in the mix to take on parts of the distressed EUME business, which is currently staring down around £30m in debt. Among those rumoured to be interested are Winston & Strawn, Greenberg Traurig, DLA Piper and KWM’s own China partnership, though KWM Europe has declined to comment on which firms have made it through to more advanced negotiations. The embattled firm is expected to announce deals by the end of this week.

It has also emerged that Reed Smith is in discussions with KWM to take on members of the legacy SJ Berwin partnership. Reed Smith Europe and Middle East partner Tamara Box commented: ‘We can expect that when there is legal talent on the market of a high calibre, I would like you to assume that Reed Smith is involved. We are absolutely always looking for great talent.’ It’s not yet clear how advanced the discussion are or how many partners Reed Smith may be considering taking on.
