Sullivan & Cromwell has made a twin leveraged finance and private credit partner hire from Weil Gotshal & Manges to further expand in London.
The incoming partners are Christopher McLaughlin and Alastair McVeigh, with McLaughlin set to lead Sullivan & Cromwell’s private equity and borrower acquisition and leveraged finance practices in London, while McVeigh will lead the firm’s European private credit offering.
McLaughlin brings extensive experience advising private equity sponsors and private credit lenders on acquisitions and leveraged finance deals. McVeigh advises clients on leveraged finance transactions, with a particular focus on direct and speciality lending, as well as large-scale restructurings.
In a joint statement, Robert Giuffra and Scott Miller, co-chairs of Sullivan & Cromwell, said: “The addition of Chris and Alastair represents a significant step in our strategic expansion in London. We’re delighted that lawyers of their calibre and experience will be joining S&C. They will allow us to provide the highest levels of expertise and client service for private equity sponsors, lenders and providers of private credit across the UK and Europe.”
McLaughlin joins after 12 years at Weil, where he was a partner. McVeigh arrives after eight years at Weil, where he became a partner in 2021. He previously had spells at Slaughter and May and legacy Allen & Overy.
London co-managing partners Kon Asimacopoulos and John Horsfield-Bradbury added: “The arrival of Chris and Alastair to S&C is a major step in the execution of our private capital strategy in London. They are top-tier lawyers across private equity acquisition and leveraged finance, private credit, direct and specialty lending.
“Together, they will play a key role in the growth of our finance offering in Europe. Their experience and approach align closely with our firm’s global platform and our US finance practice.”
The duo are the latest London hires for the New York firm, following this month’s arrival of senior finance lawyer Patrick Clancy from A&O Shearman, who joined as counsel to boost its derivatives and structured finance capabilities.
In December, the firm hired private equity and M&A partner Aprajita Dhundia and transactional tax partner Ian Ferreira from Kirkland & Ellis. While in September it added ex-Weil London office head Mike Francies, as well as Asimacopoulos, who was previously a restructuring partner at Kirkland.
