Taylor Wessing trials video game 'character test' for trainee applicants

A psychometric testing game called 'Cosmic Cadet' will be used to help single out star applicants.

The game, developed by Arctic Shores, assesses applicants based on 13 different personal traits in four categories: thinking style (including risk appetite and potential for innovation), interpersonal style (such as social confidence), aptitudes (for example, processing speed and attention control), and delivering results (such as resilience and persistence). Taylor Wessing piloted Cosmic Cadet last year and began using it to assess trainee applicants in October for the firm’s 2019 intake. ‘Visually it’s a cross between Candy Crush and Angry Birds,’ Arctic Shores director Robert Newry told Legal Week. However, he insists that seasoned gamers won’t have a leg up on their competition. ‘It is that kind of style, but as long as you can play ‘rock paper scissors’ then you can do our assessment.’
