Cab queue challenge

Hailing a cab has never been simpler thanks to apps such as Hailo and GetTaxi, but a start-up business that targets New York City's taxi network is facing some unexpected legal issues.

San Francisco-based Uber has introduced an app that allows cab drivers and potential passengers to connect, reports The New York Times.
However, city rules prohibit prearranged journeys in yellow cabs – if a driver is going to pick up a customer found via Uber, he can’t lawfully pass by a pedestrian trying to catch a lift in the street.

Uber confident

In addition, the cabbies are prohibited from using electronic devices while they are driving – which may come as a something to a surprise to those many New Yorkers who are accustomed to listening to their driver’s mobile telephone conversations, often in one of the world’s lesser-known languages .
Nevertheless, executives at Uber remain confident they are in compliance with city rules, and forecast they will add 100 cab drivers to their database each week.
