Anthony Travers joins Cayman and British Virgin Island practice Thorpe Albergo, with the firm being rebranded as Travers Thorpe Albergo.

Non-compete

The veteran offshore lawyer joined the firm after his six-year non-compete clause with his former practice, Maples & Calder, expired. He becomes senior partner at Travers Thorpe Albero, with former top lawyer Michael Albergo moving to the managing partner role.
The 11-partner firm -- which includes several ex-Maples & Calders partners -- has offices in Grand Cayman and Hong Kong and specialises in investment funds, financial services, government relations and private client work.

Asset protection

Mr Travers said he was attracted to the firm because several former colleagues were already partners and because of its expertise in financial services and regulatory work. He added that in a changing regulatory environment, the firm's emphasis on government relations ‘was now a very necessary part of a comprehensive client service’.
In the early 1990s, Mr Travers was instrumental in preparing legislation establishing the Cayman Island investment fund and private equity industries and later assisting with the legislation on asset protection. He remains chairman of the Cayman Stock Exchange.
