Former Sidley partner faces psychiatric treatment over faked cab fares

A former Sidley Austin partner who was found to have faked US$69,000 of cab fares faces the possibility of a one-year suspension and a year's psychiatric treatment.

A law firm partner is facing a disciplinary hearing over cab fares ronfromyork

Lee Smolen, now a DLA Piper partner, is the subject of a recommendation by the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) for his behaviour at his former firm. Psychiatrists testified that he was suffering from anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder at the time. He was also sleeping just three or four hours a night and working 12 to 15 hours. 

Remorse

DLA has expressed support for the lawyer, for his work over 25 years and for the steps he has taken to sort out the problem. The ARDC had noted that he did not make false charges on client accounts, that he had accepted his wrong-doing and expressed remorse. Source: ABA
