Kirkland recruits fund finance heavyweight from Clifford Chance in London

Andrew Husdan’s arrival follows Kirkland hiring first structured finance partner in London last month

Kirkland & Ellis has bolstered its fund finance offering in London with the hire of longtime Clifford Chance (CC) partner Andrew Husdan.

Chambers Band One ranked Husdan has joined the firm after nearly 20 years at CC, where he became a partner in 2016 and worked with clients including Cinven and CVC. His practice covers syndicated and bilateral fund financings, manager/GP facilities, subscription/capital call facilities, continuation fund leverage and NAV-based facilities.

“Andrew is recognised as a leader in his field with extensive experience advising financial sponsors on their complex fund finance transactions,” said Jon Ballis, chairman of Kirkland’s executive committee. “He is a great addition to our integrated, market-leading fund finance and structured products teams that focus on all aspects of fund capital solutions.”

Husdan has joined one of the largest debt finance practices in the world at Kirkland, with more than 350 dedicated lawyers. The firm has risen to a prominent position in the fund financing space in London and is an authority in sponsor-side fund finance work, a specialism of the team.

Kirkland also recruited fund finance lawyer Jack Bodkin as a partner earlier this year from Macfarlanes, where he was senior counsel, and last month recruited its first structured finance partner in London, Suril Patel, from legaltech AI platform Harvey.

The hires come against the background of a series of defections from Kirkland’s London office for Paul Weiss, as the latter builds a top-tier practice in the city around private equity. Last month Paul Weiss made its fifth partner hire of the year from Kirkland’s investment funds team, having launched a European funds practice in February with the hire of Kirkland partner James King.
