Legal action starts against Volkswagen as Leigh Day demands refunds

What is thought to be the first legal move against Volkswagen came from a UK law firm yesterday, as London-based Leigh Day asserted customer rights to a 'full refund' for costs related to buying cars they believed were clean but turned out not to be.

Volkswagen have said that more than 508,000 VW passenger cars sold in the UK carried the device; nearly 400,000 Audi vehicles, 132,000 Skodas and 77,000 Seats are also affected Tadeas

Volkswagen has admitted that 1.2m cars have been fitted with a device that cheats on recording the level of emissions. But Leigh Day has now written to new chief executive Matthias Muller and Volkswagen's lawyers, saying: 'If it is found that defeat devices have been used in our clients’ vehicles, this undoubtedly amounts to a misrepresentation and a breach of contract.'

Roundtable meeting

The Leigh Day letter requests that talks begin in order to establish a settlement scheme, 'to ensure that vehicle owners are appropriately and speedily compensated whilst minimising legal costs. We therefore propose that a roundtable meeting is held as soon as possible and we look forward to hearing from you to allow arrangements for the same to be made.' Source: City AM
