The UK’s phone hacking inquiry has cost t £3.9 million to date with £1.2 million going to the lawyers.
According to the Press Gazette, counsel to the Leveson Inquiry received £1,015,700 with an additional £222,400 paid to four other barristers who assisted with the inquiry. Robert Jay QC is the highest paid , with the Guardian newspaper guestimating he would have received between £250,000 to £430,000.
The Government estimated that the total cost of the inquiry could be in the region of £6 million by the time it ends in 2013. The inquiry was set up to investigate the culture, practices and ethics of the press. Lord Justice Levison is is set to report in November this year, slightly later than expected, with recommendations on reforms for press regulation.
The enquiry, closed in July after 96 days of witness testimonies on the press.
