American firms have been allowed to submit applications since 6 March, and Cleveland-based Squire Sanders today announced its plan with a team led by Joon Yong Kim and Edward Ghiyun Kim, both from Tokyo.
James Maiwurm, Squire Sanders chairman and global chief executive, told ALB: ‘Combined with our existing strength in China and Japan, as well as our recent expansion in Australia and anticipated opening in Singapore, the Korea office is an important part of Squire Sanders’ Asia Pacific growth strategy.’
Application bids
A raft of other US firms are expected to apply for approval soon, with two muscular New York players, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, already making their plans known. Chicago-based McDermott Will & Emery is also reported to be considering a move.
European firms gained an early lead in their applications bids, as Korea’s free trade agreements were made with the EU significantly earlier than with the US. London-based magic circle firm Clifford Chance was among the first to submit an application.
