UK might tighten drone rules in response to security scares

Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said that the government is 'aware that there are safety and security issues that need to be addressed', after some near misses involving drones and aircraft have been reported near British airports.

Mr Goodwill explained that the government 'is in early discussions with international partners about a drone traffic management system.' Near misses are said to have occurred near major airports, including Heathrow. 

Busiest areas of airspace

A spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority, the regulator for drones, said: 'Users must understand that when putting a device into the air they are interacting with one of the busiest areas of airspace in the world - a complex system that brings together all manner of aircraft including passenger aeroplanes, military jets, helicopters, gliders, light aircraft and now drones.'
