Latham & Watkins has hired experienced trial lawyer David Marriott from Cravath Swaine & Moore, the firm’s sixth major antitrust hire since February.
Marriott joins Latham in New York, where he will be a partner in its antitrust and competition practice and a member of its litigation and trial department. His practice is focused on guiding multinational companies through high-stakes disputes across IP, commercial and securities litigation matters and in multiple industries, having handled cases in federal and state courts.
Rich Trobman, chair and managing partner of Latham & Watkins, said: “The addition of Dave, a formidable talent and leading trial lawyer known for winning the hardest cases, makes perfect sense as we focus on delivering sophisticated legal advice that enables our clients to see around corners, beat down challenges to achieving their business goals and further hone their competitive position.”
Marriott arrives at Latham after completing almost 30 years at Cravath, where he became a partner in 2003. He started his legal career clerking, first for judge Albert Engel in the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and then for judge Eugene Lynch in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
Marc Jaffe, Latham’s New York office managing partner, said: “In addition to being a critical hub for our transactional practice, New York is also a key centre for litigation, and Dave is at the top of the bar. With a track record handling complex disputes and a reputation for excellence, Dave is a superb addition to our New York litigation team and an invaluable asset for our clients.”
Marriott’s arrival is the latest addition to Latham’s global antitrust bench this year. Alfonso Lamadrid joined in May from Garrigues in Brussels, while in June it hired former Department of Justice deputy assistant attorney general Andrew Forman in Washington DC.
Mike Egge, global chair of the firm’s antitrust and competition practice, said: “In just four months, Latham has added the top antitrust litigators on each side of the Atlantic, Dave and Alfonso, to our already elite global antitrust practice.
“Clients today want the complete package in antitrust – a team that can clear their biggest strategic deals anywhere in the world, combined with best-in-class litigators to defeat any possible challenges to those deals and to defend their everyday business conduct. Dave is a proven winner in court, and his joining our team makes every part of our offering more compelling.”
In other recent global antitrust moves, last month Baker McKenzie hired former DOJ lawyer Tim Finley in its Washington office, while in March, Morrison Foerster hired competition specialist Jan Lang as a partner from Cooley in Brussels.
