Leading firm slashes costs with major back-office move

New York-headquartered law firm Kaye Scholer is to move its back-office functions to a standalone centre in Florida in a bid to cut costs, it was announced yesterday.

The decision, reported by the Am Law Daily, follows last week’s announcement by magic circle firm Allen & Overy to transfer some of its US and Europe-based support teams to a Belfast office opened in 2011.

Hello Tallahassee

Kaye Scholer’s move to Tallahassee will be the latest in a string of out-of-town relocations in recent years that have seen Boston’s Bingham McCutchen open administrative operation in Lexington, Kentucky, and New York’s Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman launch a back-office centre in Nashville.
According to the report, the firm is making the move to reduce the amount of space it leases in Manhattan when its New York office changes addresses next year.

Down-sizing denial

‘We've been working on this [new operations centre] for a while because it affects how much space we'll take in the new building,’ said Kaye Scholer chief operating officer Jeffrey Hunter.
Mr Hunter also stressed that the move was not a step towards down-sizing the back-office. ‘Everyone working now has a job if they want it,’ he said.
