City firms interviewed say the contract enables trainees to develop legal judgement working with senior lawyers

The warning comes in response to options being considered by the Solicitors' Regulatory Authority to create greater standardisation between qualifications. One option is to end the two-year training contract.

Reflecting views expressed by some of the top firms, Jonathan Smithers, president of the Law Society, spoke of newly-qualified UK lawyers by saying: 'They come out prepared to and ready to work with experience as compared to other jurisdictions. We would not want to see a diminution in the value of that gold standard.' Source: FT
