Welsh solicitor confessed to fraud before drowning

Gareth Evans, 64, was found drowned on a beach, still wearing his office pin stripe suit, shortly after he had confessed to a £2m fraud to police.

Mr Evans had confessed that he had forged the signature of a client to transfer a £2m farm. That confession would most likely have put him in jail, and he was facing the start of his trial days after he died. The client - a farmer who was an alcoholic with liver and mental health problems - died destitute. Details of the crime are still unclear.

Open verdict

Mr Evans had appeared normal before his death, asking his wife what was for dinner that night before leaving the family home. But his car was found later near a beach and his body was washed up 15 miles away. A coroner gave an open verdict. Source: Wales Online
